Rana Begum

WP6 (orange & purple)
2009
Paper
29 x 42 cm

These paper works act as three dimensional sketches, the seeding ground for ideas that can develop into large scale works. As such, these works remain playful, a riot of colour and jagged pattern, originating both in Islamic geometry and urban chaos.

Hektor Mamet

Proposal for an Alternative Chessboard
2008
Inject Print on Paper
20 x 20 cm

Hektor Mamet sees the chessboard as a universe much like our own with infinite possibilities. In this piece a proposal has been made for a chessboard reduced only to parallel worlds, where Rooks move across the board back and forwards without ever making contact with each other, resulting in a chessboard that is impossible to play.

Toby Christian

One Rice
2009
Marble
4 x 13 x 5 cm

Based on the ancient fable surrounding the invention of chess, Toby Christian presents One Rice, a proposed solution for an exponential problem.“Toby Christian’s practice probes into the taken-for-granted of art making and art display. Like a stagehand
manipulates props on a theatre stage to modify and rebuild the illusion of the set, Christian’s work both unwraps and fuels the mythology associated with sculpture.”
Coline Milliard, 2009
