Portrait of a Wood Stork

Portrait of a Wood Stork

The wood stork is an amazing looking creature. The are typically 35" to 45" tall and weigh between 4.5 and 5.8 lbs. They have a wing-span of 60" to 65".
The wood stork is considered an endangered species.
In the 1930s there were an estimated 20,000 nesting pairs. This figure has declined over the years due to the reduction of their food base (small fish) probably as a result of diminishing cypress swamps, their natural nesting habitat. Currently the nesting population is probably greater than 8,000 pairs. This is difficult to determine as all pairs do not nest. The good new is the South American population is in much better shape.
