This is how Firefox 3.0.10 on an iMac renders some MathML. See: www.nag.com/numeric/FL/manual/xhtml/A02/a02aaf.xml in Firefox.
Compare this to www.flickr.com/photos/__olga__/2968076110/ -- a pic of the same page rendered on an iPhone. It appears that the Firefox rendering is correct, and compare to www.nag.com/numeric/FL/manual/pdf/A02/a02aaf.pdf which is a PDF with the same content.
Note: the big revelation on the Firefox side, is that the above rendering is mathematically wrong (not what was intended by the original markup) -- to get it right you need to install the STIX fonts. Thanks to the discussion with Olga I finally saw the light. (See: www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts/ for info on MathML support in Mozilla browsers and a link to download the STIX fonts, and see the comments below and Olga's pic of the correct rendering in Firefox).
