Family Photo 2012

My 2012 Family Photo - BTS photos and a writeup on my blog: www.JVLphoto.com

Strobist info: I started by filling the room with an "ambient" level of flash, which was with a Elinchrom Ranger Quadra asymmetric pack, one flash head was high and angled up at the ceiling to create an upper light that would fall downwards, and the other was positioned just below camera level, bounced off the wall & diffused through a 60" umbrella for fill (both at camera left).

To fill in a bit of the right, there is a LP160 bounced into a silver reflector and into the room to, basically, evenly light my feet & lower pants.

Window light is a 3x3' Lastolite Skylite with another quadra pack blasted through it to mimic sunlight (the day was overcast).

There's a Lastolite strip at camera left, behind my wife, providing some accent to her shoulders using a 580exII

Finally, everyone was "hit" with a 580exII through Lumiquest Softbox Ltp on a painters pole to give their face a bit of key.

Man, did that hurt when the knee came down on your face?

Another great shot. You must have some hours in processing.

I didn't see the glass at first, so my first glance at this photo was fulfilled with awkwardness.

      HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The more prep I do pre-shoot, the easier post-processing becomes. That said - yes - there's always a lot to do.

      Totally.

I sent her an email with a screen cap, you'll probably be invited over for dinner soon.

      Thanks everyone!

There's a reason Costco offers really shallow - really wide prints and board mounting of off sizes. Grandparents should be clearing wall space now.

If that's planking, that's the laziest planking I've ever seen. Props!

i like that you've shot this in a very normal place; the sofa. I can see why you get a lot of business out of this kind of shoot as it appeals to a lot of people. On the lighting, it definitely pops, but for me the shadow on the left looks a bit strange. Still, very well executed - great timing and direction, impressive photo.

I think it's the polar opposite of this quick family portrait I did the other day:
