I recon it is because the soil contracts
(gets smaller) as the water evaporates. The
top being the hottest dries first. The soil
underneath is still moist and bigger with all
the water in it. This soil would be fairly
sticky while wet. When the water leaves the
soil bits stick together and hold on, until
they can't no more. And this is where you get
the first cracks. You wouldn't find this with sand, because the
grains don't stick together. Hope this helps :) btw. your flickr pages inspired me to get an
