when i was a little girl, my beloved 'madame alexander' doll broke. i think her eyes would no longer close, or something.
near where we lived, in michigan, there was a doll hospital. it even had a sign on the front that said that. my grandmother, who was rarely pleasant, took her to the doll hospital. at least that was what she *said* she was doing.
i didn't believe it. i had already come to believe that her philosophy was more the "if it's broken, it's worthless -- throw it away!" variety. said in the tone of the queen in 'alice in wonderland,' "off with her head!" and besides -- she's *just* a doll, why are you making such a big fuss?!!
but i was wrong. my doll came back all fixed. but i still didn't trust my grandmother.
added after checking: OMG! it's still there!
