cherries

my husband found these great little pewter tins at a garage sale... they are my new favorite!

For Still Life With Everyone's a Critic Theme

Although I do a lot of other stuff, I always seem to come back to basic, beautiful editorial style ingredient shots as my favorites, and I couldn't resist taking a few shots of these cherries.

I love the little water beads on the cherries themselves... it's just water, not glycerin or anything. But, I wish I had cleaned up some of the water to the front, right of the cherry on the table as it leads the eye out of the photo.

A few things I thought of after the fact. I like the horizon line (apparently the "are back in style" by the way), but I think it would have been better to have some color, like a light shade of green, instead of the tan-beige color. The green would act as a great contrast color for the red cherries. I'd also like to bring out the green in the cherry stems some.

One of the happy accidents that really I should have done a better job at planning, is that I like the way the stems reach up, just begging you to pluck one from the container. To me, they add movement to the still life.

Those are my thoughts... what do you think?

    Great photo!
The beige is rustic looking, which goes well with the tin :)
I don't know if you know my photos, but I use alot of aqua with my flowers. Goes with everything!
Green might bring out the green in the stems a little too...

I like the water by the cherry, it looks a natural element. Think you are right about another primary color in the background,

I agree - the water by the cherry on the table looks very natural. I think the tan-beige horizon worked here great. It is in line with the rustic feel. Loved the tins btw... I am very curious to know where the light is coming from.. back? back + both sides?

Hi you're maybe right about the green back ground although I think beige s OK too. You may experiment with blue as well :)
I support natural water on the cherries, stick to natural :)
great idea with the zinc bucket (or at least it seems so to me)
    nice!

Fernando - the key light is a window behind. I have frosted paper taped up over the window. There is another window, futher away, to the right which adds just a little light. Then, I use a bounce to fill in some light in front and to the left side.

I love th little reflection that we can see in the front cherry, like a small mirror. It is a beautiful simple compo. I agree that bringing the green in the stems would have been a plus, but quite hard to achieve, isn't it? I am not sure how. As to the colors, I think the beige works well here. It is soft and should not be noticed as the attention is on the cherries.

I love the simplicity of this. especially the cherries on the top.. you're right about the angle of their stems. big fan of the tins too
