WORKERS BESIDE THE COAL CONVEYOR.
THE BIGAS PILOT PLANT HAS A TWO-STAGE, ENTRAINED-BED GAS- IFIER. IN THIS GASIFIER, PULVERIZED COAL IS CONVERTED TO METHANE-RICH GAS BY REACTING THE COAL WITH STEAM AND OXYGEN UNDER HIGH PRESSURE. THE METHANE-RICH GAS IS PROCESSED TO REMOVE THE HYDROGEN SULFIDE AND CARBON DIOXIDE WHICH LEAVES THE HIGH BTU GAS. THE BIGAS REACTOR CAN HANDLE ALL TYPES OF COAL. DUE TO THE HIGH OPERATING TEMPERATURE OF OVER 2500 DEGREES F., THERE IS NO TAR IN THE PRODUCT GAS, THUS SIMPLIFYING THE GAS CLEANUP STEP. HIGH METHANE YIELDS ARE ACHIEVED WITHOUT METHANATION, AND COALS CAN BE GASIFIED WITHOUT PRIOR TREATMENT BECAUSE THE PROCESS USES AN ENTRAINED-BED RATHER THAN A FIXED-BED OR FLUIDIZED-BED SYSTEM.
