Another picture that needed to be taken in the vertical format. When you look through your view finder, look for wasted space that has nothing to do with your subject & try to minimize it.
This photo has a lot of wasted space on both the left & the right side. Therefore, it might have been better if the camera had been in the vertical format when it was taken.
This photo already uses the rule of thirds. You can see both Josiah's expression & understand what he is focused on. The damaged blinds in the background could be considered a distraction; or they might be a recorded treasured memory.
Here you can see where a simple thing like cropping the last picture from an 8X12 to an 8X10 puts Josiah's face on one of the grid lines for the "rule of thirds." You can learn these tips from my photography for beginners course offered on my website.
In this picture, Josiah is in the center, but there is a lot of wasted space on the left of the picture. How do you think it could be made better? See next picture.
When you take more that one picture of the same subject, you should do it to improve some aspect of the picture either technically, or in capturing unique expressions!
Because was their daddy's birthday & he was willing to play with fire with his birthday candle & share it with Jennifer & Josiah, it was producing opportunities for some interesting pictures! The first rule is: Always bring your camera & flash with you!
In this picture Jennifer's being pleased with herself even extends to her "pretend" relationship with her baby doll, who she thinks has also contributed to the success of these pictures!
As the picture session continues, notice that Jennifer is now pleased that she has pleased the photographer. That's why parents & grandparents can get the best pictures of children: They are "in tune" with the children & the children will respond to them!
Jennifer was asked to give her "baby" a kiss, & if you are ready, you'll get another great picture! Also, a series of pictures like this gives you the chance to work on getting the technical side of your pictures right!
Here we go with the relaxed natural pose! Now, you can see an example of why you need to gently lead your child when you are photographing them. It gives you the chance to improve too!
Here you see Jennifer holding her baby doll tenderly & the pictures are starting to be more natural, but she is still quite aware of the photographer. So, she was asked if she could snuggle her baby. See next picture.
Your first pictures may be a little forced or "cheesy." You know that you have got to get her to relax. Gently guide by asking questions: "What are you thinking about with your new baby?" If you relax too, they'll respond.
So, you are suddenly into a photo session before even realizing it. Try to have your child get comfortable in someplace that will contain few distractions to add to your pictures. "How about you sit down here with your baby?"
Jennifer has just gotten a new baby doll & wants to show it off. So, it's a great time to get her to cooperate for some pictures. This was taken with bouncing the flash; not direct flash which would have washed out a lot of the detail.
Josiah displays his joy with his birthday gift! His birthday was in November in the north country which accounts for his very red ears, but this close-up picture contains the important points that we have been discussing.
Jennifer is quietly watching her brother enjoy a birthday gift. Notice how her gently personality is captured in this picture.
You don't want to forget the siblings at the birthday party either! Here Jennifer is talking to her mother on daddy's cell phone. The flash was bounced for nice even lighting, the background is uncluttered & you can see the "rule of thirds" being used.
