The stylists are there, but have to follow the dictate of the buyers. They are the problem too here. People expect so much of a car these days, no matter if it is a sportscar. It is almost impossible to sell any car to the affluent clientèle, if it can't accomodate two golf bags - so, bulky trunks have to be added. See Jaguar XK, Mercedes SL. One of the reasons the Bugatti EB110 failed in the 1990s, was that it had no storage space at all. Owners couldn't even take it for a weekend trip. In a different class, that was the same problem with the final and unsuccesful Toyota MR2. Try to fit two weekend bags in that car, while with clever packaging two people can go on vacation in a Miata. Styling takes a back seat to function these days, any many people couldn't care less anymore how their vehicles look. If people did, who would buy an MPV?
