Lavender Pit Mine, Bisbee, AZ

Many people think the name comes from the beautiful color that the pit has. It doesn't.
The Lavender Pit is part of the Copper Queen Mine, run by the Phelps Dodge Corporation from 1879 to 1975. Mining took place in underground tunnels and shafts until 1951 when it was determined by Harrison Lavender, the then-manager of the Copper Queen Branch of Phelps Dodge, that an open pit mine would be an economical way to increase ore yield. The resulting Lavender Pit was mined in 50 foot benches created by loading holes drilled to a 60-foot depth with 1,200 pounds of powder charge. Blasts commonly broke 75,000 tons of rock and were usually shot at 3:25 each afternoon. Mining in the pit stopped in 1974 and all mining operation ceased in the Copper Queen Mine in 1975 when the price of copper plummeted. The abandoned pit covers 300 acres, is 950 feet deep, and is a result of the removal of 351 million tons of material. Since mining operations ceased, the town of Bisbee reinvented itself as an artist community and historical tourist destination. During this reinvention, the Lavender Pit became a tourist destination with rim viewing platforms and guided tours.

I have been to Bisbee many times. It is a neat place to see. Still has many Victorian buildings and left-overs from the mining days including a brothel street (not active!). It would probably be a ghost town if it weren't for the artist community and tourist business. The underground mine conducts tours on the little train complete with rain gear! It is well worth a tour! Each year on the weekend after Thanksgiving a home tour of a section Bisbee takes place. Again, worth a visit to see the old and the current use. Somewhere I have more photos but haven't located yet.

It is an area the provokes reaction from both sides of the mining argument. Many see it as an eyesore, others just historic, and others that it may be opened again in the future.

Great shot Diana! Hope you aren't prone to vertigo. Although it's unsightly and the ore was low grade, the turquoise and other 'blue' mineral specimens from this area are world class. And thanks!!

Interesting story of a wonderful place (at least from a photographic point of view). The colors of the rocks are really awesome and wish I could visit myself places of such a visual impact.

    Hi Diana,

Nice shot here! Power of industry.

Thanks for your kind comment- the picture is back again! I have been to Yosemite (stayed for a couple of weeks) and it is indeed absolutely stunning. Shame about the traffic running through it but you walk for a little while and there's no sign of another being.... maybe a bear though!

Hetch valley sounds like a very sad story if it was anything like Yosemite, even if it is to provide for a great city like SF... I wonder if there are any photos of it before it was flooded?
