Decided to try out Pioneer Woman's photography assignment for this week - thepioneerwoman.com/photography/2010/11/edit-this-3/ - which involves doing whatever edits you feel like to one of her photographs of the mustangs on the ranch.
To achieve the above image, I combined two photographs of surf (both by Brendan Ede, used under a Creative Commons license) and a desaturated and slightly blue-tinted copy of the horses. I hand-painted layer masks to control the visibility of the three layers and combine the beach from one shot, the surf from the second, and the horses.
Once I had a result I was happy with, I took a flattened copy of the image, trimmed it to produce the rounded corners, and added an edge burn on a multiply layer over top of the image.
The rocky shore in the foreground was too orange in tone (and the water a bit too blue) so I desaturated the whole image slightly, then used the grain filter to add the faint vertical streaking. Finally I used a couple of downloaded brushes to add the slight mottling along the upper edge, and the streaky mark.
