Ian Allan ABC of Bristol Tramways vehicles, cover by A N Wolstenholme - 1949
Another in the charming series of bus and coach 'ABC' guides that Ian Allan produced in the post-WW2 period - this snapshot of the fleet of Bristol Tramways dates from 1949. It is worth noting that one thing you wouldn't find in this ABC is a Bristol tram - the system didn't survive WW2 although the company name kept on until 1957! The city was one of the largest in Britain whose system was not fully municipally owned - although from 1937 the council became part of the joint ownership of the company. Two years prior to this guide the company became part of the nationalised BTC. Bristol was famous for not just running buses but building them. The scraperboard cover is by the well-known transport illustrator A N Wolstenholme and, for the nearly all-Bristol Bristol fleet shows one of the very few Leyland buses run! LAE 13 was a 1948 Leyland Titan PD1, vehicle number C4044 in the fleet.
