Old posters in disused passageway at Notting Hill Gate tube station, London, 2010

    Prev Next

Work at the station has recently uncovered these amazing advertising posters in non-public areas and that date from c1956 - 1959 when the station's lifts were removed and replaced by escalators. These are in an old lift passageway.

Here a variety of posters can be seen - some are London Transport's own posters such as the 'elephant' by Victor Galbraith - but others include the Royal Blue sailor by Daphne Paddern.

We will be leaving these intact - and please do not pester the station staff as the posters are wholly inaccessible - which is why they've probably survived 50 odd years!

The photos were taken officially - please do credit London Underground in any links.

Amazing!! Are there plans for these? Will they end up available for public viewing?

Thanks for all your comments - and no, we've no plans for 'public viewing' - the area is wholly inaccessible and, given the issues as to paper conservation and protection, we've decided for now to 're-seal the tomb' and leave well alone. Who knows, one day they may be re-visited.

don't leave them to deteriorate, offer them up to someone to preserve, share, sell, whatever, just get them out into the world to be appreciated.

I once spotted a 15-year-old Sylvester Stallone movie poster in a sealed-off part of the NYC subway system; your find is even more impressive.
