She's leaving home, bye bye

Washington state, USA, or bust!
She's leaving home, bye bye by Rich007.
Inspired by The Beatles' 1967 song of the same name, a favourite old suitcase originally found in an antiques shop that, if only trunks could talk, would no doubt have many tales to tell, and quite possibly a little too much Blavorange and absinthe...

Taken in Old Fletton, Peterborough, England on October 20, 2007.

Must be your-legs-related-humbleness, or the inspiring song, or that fantastic suitcase and all the moments it contains, or even the position and angle for the left heel, but somehow I like it.

Her escape was thwarted when her stilletto heels caught in the seam of the plank floor, dropping the wench to her knees, breaking an ankle in the process. Of course, I gave her a wrap with an Ace bandage and took the rap for the floor. Then elevated that injury.

BuckarooBob, you're terrible! I would have expected nothing less from a fellow journalist though. The injury is recovering well, but I'm still paying it close personal medical attention, naturally. "Trust me, I am a doctor..."

Sorry Rich, that shot hit me like a mule kick to my third eye (I'm working on channeling the rebirth of Mickey Spillane) sending the vibrations up and down my chakras---falling dominos kicking like the Rockettes chorus line in a Christmas spectacular. I couldn't help myself.

I would have never thought a young woman sneaking out of the house before dawn to run away with a man her parents disapprove of would be wearing spiked heels.

Ah, but he's in the motor trade, remember Paul. He was probably meeting her outside in a 1965 Jaguar Mk2 3.8, thus ensuring she didn't have to totter too far on those heels...

Delta Niner  Pro User  says:

Ah, you see I always took "Motor Trade" to mean that he was a mechanic and therefore beneath her station. And that's why the parents disapproved of him. Now I know they disapproved because he was a skeevy used car salesman.

I like my interpretation better. I like to think of this young girl as an innocent who is following the path of love by running off with the poor young mechanic that her parents disapprove of and not a bratty little party girl who runs off with some older guy because he has a flash car and a pocket full of money.

But then again there is the line "She's Having Fun (Fun is the one thing that money can't buy)" which can be interpreted in a number of ways. Apparently the parents have money, they are a well to do middle class suburban family that lavishes their only child with everything she needs, but what her teenaged heart desires is to get out and have some fun.

The parents are well meaning, but flawed. In my interpretation their flaw is their snobbery. They must keep up appearances. They can't have their only daughter marrying a lowly mechanic. In your interpretation their flaw, as it were, is their morals. They don't want their daughter running off with a sketchy older man to go partying.

I want to believe that this girl is following the path of love. Her parents, the song clearly wants us to have sympathy for the parents, will eventually come to accept this young man. There is a lot more to his character than what meets the eye. They will come to see that they should have trusted their daughters judgment. They raised her right after all.

I don't want to believe that this girl is a coked up slut bound to break her parents hearts.

Rich007  Pro User  says:

The 'motor trade' line was, I believe, purely an in-joke the Beatles put in, as a reference to one of their friends who was a car dealer, albeit a high class one. He definitely wasn't a mechanic.

But, yes, the rest of your perception of the song is pretty much spot on. Paul McCartney came across a story in the Daily Mail newspaper of February 27, 1967, about 17-year-old runaway Melanie Cole, who was studying for her A-level exams. She mysteriously and suddenly left home with nothing, her father saying at the time "I cannot imagine why she should run away. She has everything here." Paul used the story as the basis for She's Leaving Home, creating one of his best (and best-loved) songs in the process, to tell the tale of a young girl sneaking away from her claustrophobically respectable home in search of fun and romance in the swinging Sixties.

In a strange twist to the story, it turned out Paul had actually met Melanie three years previously, as she was a massive Beatles fan.

Fortunately, the girl in my photo seems perfectly happy at the moment, and, hopefully, has no plans of running away. Although she does regularly sneak away to meet a man associated with a few dodgy old motors :-)
