Is this possibly a smile? No matter how joyous the child's face, every time I go to snap a picture, they suddenly turn stonefaced! Beautiful shot!

Without a doubt, my favorite subject is the child. Spontaneous, unguarded, dramatic, children let their spirits guide them. What a joy to be in the presence of unfurling emotion. With those little hands, and wide eyes, and lips that quiver or draw thin, children use their entire bodies to be.

But their faces, especially, inspire.

Perhaps my favourite aspect of photographing children in Africa is summed up in this picture- the way so many of them love to get in front of the lens the moment you take the camera out. You can see it on their faces here, they way they squeeze into the frame, there's almost a hunger to have their image taken. Here their eyes seem to be saying, "please remember me!"
