    Westminster Underground Station, London, England
UPDATE OCTOBER 2012 - #3 on Explore for 03.10.2012 - thank you very much everybody! :-)

Apologies to those who wanted to read the description with this image yesterday, it seems that Flickr/Lightroom had overwritten my original description when I uploaded this square crop version or I might have accidentally deleted it ;-).

This is the same staircase at Westminster Underground station that I uploaded a week or so ago however this time looking up. I have gone for a different feel and look. More of a high key process with lots of contrast. This type of processing really brings out the details in the wall as you can see, especially the graffiti which is a nice urban touch. I originally uploaded a normal crop but preferred this square crop as it tamed the angles a little, too much going on before. Thanks for the suggestion Martin Turner on that one :-)

    Information
Westminster is a London Underground station in the City of Westminster. It is served by the Circle, District and Jubilee lines. On the Circle and District lines, the station is between St. James's Park and Embankment and, on the Jubilee line it is between Green Park and Waterloo. It is in Travelcard Zone 1. The station is located at the corner of Bridge Street and Victoria Embankment and is close to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster Bridge and the London Eye. Also close by are Downing Street, the Cenotaph, Westminster Millennium Pier, the Treasury, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Supreme Court.

The station is in two parts: sub-surface platforms opened in 1868 by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR) as part of the company's first section of the Inner Circle route and deep level platforms opened in 1999 as part of the Jubilee line extension from Green Park to Stratford. A variety of underground and mainline services have operated over the sub-surface tracks, but the original station was completely rebuilt in conjunction with the construction of the deep level platforms and Portcullis House which sits above the station.

I love all the textures and urban details on the walls. Black and white processing much suits the scene. Not sold on the angle though, perspective looks a little awkward (just my opinion though).

I had to cut a bit off the top as it was too much of a distraction (half a light) I think that might be why its slightly different maybe? Maybe a square crop may have worked better here.

I had a feeling you may have chopped a bit off the top; as you suggest a square may look better.

uploaded a square crop which I do prefer.

I like the looking up version. Not so atmospheric as the looking down version, but it plays tricks on my mind. (If you know what I mean...) :)

Congratulations on getting Explore!! You have probably seen that there are a lot of pictures featured on Explore that don't really measure up to the quality you'd expect for this special "Flickr award". However, in my opinion, THIS picture is fantastic and definitely deserves to be here! You should feel extremely proud of your talent, and it is a pleasure to see your work! Well done and great job!! *high five*
