50/3 anon Anchor As McCabe group D1 in style Cr. 50 anchor series, Janus Prow As 38g36 #09160-38
As. 212-195BC. 38.36grams. Rome mint. Anonymous. Crawford 056/02 Anonymous. Obverse: hd Janus. Reverse: prow r, I, ROMA. Common.
A remarkable coin, although common in type the exceptional quality of the die-cutting and the strike mark this out. It is freshly struck with hardly a trace of wear, only the uneven strike caused obverse weakness and there is a flan air-bubble on the reverse. But, if a coin has two halves, then the good side of this coin, the left obverse and upper reverse, are essentially perfect in die quality, lack of wear, surfaces and strike. It is a prototypical example of Crawford 56 for those who can look past the obvious defects and shows the intended quality of such coins. Coinarchives has several (not many) better examples for overall look, but none with the special characteristics of this coin.
