101/2 #0940-20 KOPK Corcyra Roma Dioscuri KOR AG monograms Quinarius

Quinarius. 212-195BC. 2.02grams. Corcyra mint. Anonymous. Crawford 101/02 KOPK AΓ. Obverse: hd Roma r. Reverse: Dioscuri r, KOR, AG monograms. Extremely Rare.

Adriatic island of Corcyra, a coin from the second Punic war, about 210BC. In the first 500 years of Roman coinage this very rare coin is one of only a handful examples where a non-Italian or Sicilian place name is used as an explicit mintmark. In fact the mintmark is the small monogram KORK under the rear hooves, not the larger AG under the front legs. The latter is probably a magistrates name. This coin is discussed on andrewmccabe.ancients.info/Auctions.html and related pages.
