WOW，I like it ！

- explored #1 - thank you!!

I'm finding a lot of folks my age are feeling the same way I do right now. We grew up being told to just go get a degree. Stop at nothing to get one. Go into debt and pay whatever for the education, because with a degree you can pay it off in no time. It's worth it. It doesn't matter what your degree is in, you just need one. And it will bring you success in the real world.

But this isn't the case anymore, is it? Now the market wants a Master's with 10 years of experience. And it's shrinking to the point that it can make such demands because goodness knows there are thousands of us grasping for that one opening.

I'm not mad nor do I blame society/parents for engraining such teachings in us. A degree was truth for so long and with the exception of a few conspiracy theorists, no one saw this recession coming. We were prepared for one type of world, only to get out in it and learn the hardest lesson of all – things change.

So, let's be done with bitter. Let's be done being victims. Let's be done with “life's not fair.”

Instead, let's be smarter. Let's define the next greatness. Let's rise above and create a better society.

I'm accepting that horizons have changed. It's a brave new world baby. Here's to jumping in with both feet.

Definitely degrees in photography or sound production, etc seem not to be worth it. Engineering or accounting is one thing, but I know lots of photographers that got their degrees in it but can't seem to make a living in it... just think if they put that tuition money into equipment or a studio space instead of listening to someone tell them about what rules not to break.

I'm finally good on the work front but wish schools would build up the majors that are needed more rather than the ones the students flock to. Its so hard to get into medicine but we need so many more doctors for example. Just my 2 cents.

paradigm shiftage! the trick is, what's the new paradigm? that's what i'm trying to figure out. not that i want to do anything other than get a PhD and teach, for what that's worth, when all's said and done...

Yeah, you were taught the right thing -- to invest in yourself, in your education. Unfortunately, our business and government leaders weren't following suit. They were busy TAKING everything they could get, rather than building and investing. It's going to take years of investing in people to recover.

This is a beautiful and creative shot... and it's really nice to see you again. =)

I know that even in my lifetime the expectations on these things have changed so much. I'm glad I'm not starting over at 20 (though I have to say parts of it are not a whole lot nicer at 40).

I am out of work too now and it is tough for all of us but especially you young one's who have done you best to follow what has been engrained. You are smart to be realistic, the best of all lessons. I remember being "your age". I was tops in my class at architectural drafting. I was supposed to go off to university to study architecture. And then a recession hit. I thought to myself "Go study for 8 years, and then only be able to make money in big steel structures?? No thank you!". So I didn't go to university. No more that 3 or 4 years later and the downturn turned into a boom. I ended up finding a different path than architecture, but just remember to every ying, there is a yang.

I'm studying an Engineering and in the software development field everybody wants people with experience (e.g., 3+ years) plus be an expert in some language, and the degree is secundary.So is the same.
