A simple method of painting in Photoshop CS5
Process you image normally, but apply a little over saturation!
Duplicate image, and select Filter >> Stylize >> Emboss(140, 12 & 127%); >> Set Blending mode to Overlay!
Create a New Layer >> Edit >> Fill (50% Grey) >> Filter >> Texture >> Texturizer (Canvas, 200%, 10, Light to Left) >> set Blending Mode to Overlay!
Make a free hand selection, around edge >> invert >> apply Feathering (100 pixels) >> Fill with White!
Done!
