ancient marble

ancient marble

Istanbul, Turkey
The marble in the Hagia Sophia so subtle and varied, and yet it the sheer perspective of the domes or the more glorious mosaics. But, looking at it closely, the beauty of its ancient patina and warmth/coolness is hard to equal.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul.
Beauty in every corner in this magnificent building.

I may not be posting very regularly for a while, as my computer was drowned in miso soup over the weekend, and I am limping along with a replacement. Let's see how it goes . . . .

a place of contradictions

a place of contradictions

Dolapdere and the Evangelistra Rum Ortodoks Kilesesi (Greek Orthodox Church). This is a part of Istanbul that has yet to be touched by the wrecker's ball, and has a long history. Near the Golden Horn, formerly a hub of shipbuilding that dated back to the times of Suleiman the Magnificent, this church has ties to seamen. Now the neighbourhood is a mixture of many peoples, mostly very poor. My mini series shows some of the contrasts that exist in this place of contradictions. On Sundays there is a church service in the church, while outside there is the extreme chaos of the weekly Sunday market and its surroundings.

This snow scene was taken some weeks ago, but today there is still similar weather. Spring is just around the corner we hope!

an unsung hero II

an unsung hero II

Istanbul, Turkey
Sunday, 26th February, 2012
A morning market of small pickings in Dolapdere, and all the barrow men are busily unloading their canvas barrows. Again, I look into their faces and am humbled at what I see. Here in Istanbul we are not currently separating our garbage so those who are recycling by hand have masses of cardboard, bottles etc. to find and to sell. Soon this will end, as official notices tell us that soon we need to sort out these things ourselves. The barrow men will then be on the lookout for other categories of discarded items for their canvas bags.
