If asked, 9 out of 10 people would entitle an article about this piece, "God Doesnt Play Dice, But Robert Hodgin Does."

1000 dice forming an image of God's mug (or Charleton Heston). Not a new idea. Pierre Fouche did a piece for Bell Gallery using a bunch of dice. I was pointed to a music video that used dice in the same way (http://joyriderfilms.com/wade_shotter/ankle_injury.html). And lets not forget the much more interesting Rubik's Cube Portraits that are popping up in the tubes. But I had some dice and was feeling like getting into a zen state so there you have it.

Love that the smaller the image, the clearer the representation within it. Perhaps something metaphorical there.

Really cool! Did you use any computing to help you do the layout or was it just "eyeballed"?

I just grabbed a photo of 'god' and turned it into a 6 color greyscale image gif. Then it was just a matter of patience.

You mentioned that Pierre Fouche did a piece for Bell Gallery.

      With an earlier Bell:

Ken Knowlton made portraits using computers and dice at Bell Labs around 1966.

His more recent works use computers with other media to make mosaics:
