Total Fire Ban Day January 11, 2010. Evening Swelter

This was the temperature by 9:15pm. By midnight it would still be 37 degrees, giving Victorians their warmest night since 1902.

On the positive side of things, Victoria's first day with a Catastrophic Fire Alert passed calmly, CFA crews being very quick on handling fires that sprang up.

This so far was the closest day to Black Saturday in temperature. It was the first real test of whether the state had learnt anything from February 2009.

The fact there were no deaths reported, or any major catastrophic fires endangering lives is a testament to those that did learn the lesson of Black Saturday

It was the first Code Red day in Victoria (in the Wimmera district). Total Fire Ban in the whole state. At 4pm, the temperatue was 43.6 in Melbourne.

And yet, this was the view of the sky in such sweltering heat. Photo taken on an iPhone, North Coburg.

Cool Down

Cool Down

Following two hot days, Saturday November 21, 2009 has a decent bit of rain, cooling things down greatly in the Melbourne metropolitan area and most of Victoria.

New South Wales, however, still has a few bushfires they have to deal with.
