Midday at San Esteban

Midday at San Esteban

The Dominican priory and church of San Esteban was built between the 16th and the 17th centuries. The facade of the church with its great arch framing the sculptures of various Dominican saints, and tableaux of the crucifixion of the Lord, and the martyrdom of St Stephen, are by Juan Antonio Ceroni. It was completed in 1610.

The elegant Renaissance loggia which forms the entrance porch to the priory itself was constructed by Juan Ribero de Rada between 1590 - 1592.

Ascending to the Upper Cloister

Ascending to the Upper Cloister

The Dominican theologian and confessor to Charles V, Domingo de Soto, has this staircase built in 1553-6 to connect the two storeys of the main processional cloister in San Esteban, Salamanca. It was built by Roderigo Gil de Hontañón, and is noted for its engineering because "neither the landings nor the steps are supported by the walls, but each step rests on the one below it and they are all pressed into the stairwell".
