Great Blue Heron Courtship Exchange Of A Stick Wakodahatchee Wetlands

Great Blue Heron Courtship Exchange Of A Stick Wakodahatchee Wetlands

Linda and I hope everyone had a great weekend!! This is a photo that I took earlier this year of part of the nest building courtship that Great Blue Herons perform! It is beautiful to watch this behavior. Many times when the mate flies back to the nest the birds will get very close to each other and lay their heads on the partners body. Thanks for looking and we will see you on Wednesday !!

White Crowned Pigeon In Flight Wings Out Plantation Key Florida

White Crowned Pigeon In Flight Wings Out Plantation Key Florida

I thought I would share another in flight photo of a White Crowned Pigeon from last weekend. They are really a very beautiful bird and a treat to see. They are a species of special concern and a Red Alert bird ( see other photo for more information). One thing I did not mention before is that the White Crowned Pigeons that nest in the Keys of Southern Florida also fly back and forth to Cuba and the Bahamas, that is why our birds are so skittish. Returned bands (hunted birds) from Florida White Crowned Pigeons have come from the Eastern Bahamas, Cuba and even Jamacia. Thanks for looking and all the comments.... We will put up our next photo on Tuesday. Have a great holiday and weekend everyone !!

Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow Everglades National Park

Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow Everglades National Park

This is a species of bird that does not look like much but is one of the most highly endangered bird species in North America. It has been on the Endangered Species List since 1967 and is completely reliant on a healthy Everglades National Park. It's habitat is the open Sawgrass Praries with a natural sheet flow of water and fires. Because of this, its range has continued to shrink, 99% of its population is found only in Everglades National Park. It is a very difficult bird to approach and they spend most of their life running along the ground and through the grasses. Thanks for looking and all the comments.

Bachman's Sparrow Singing

Bachman's Sparrow Singing

I shot this photo earlier this year when the male Bachman Sparrows were on perches singing in the early morning. This is one of the more uncommon Sparrows in Florida because of habitat loss. They live in areas that have only mature Pine Trees and not in areas were trees are farmed. They are listed as a species of special concern and are a Red Alert Species. Thanks for looking and all the comments.

White Crowned Pigeon In Flight Plantation Key Florida

White Crowned Pigeon In Flight Plantation Key Florida

Linda and I hope everyone had a great weekend !! We were in the Keys and did some shooting between storms and our Goddaughters Prom pictures.

This is not an easy photo to get! Not only are they fast but they are very skittish. This bird is protected in Florida and hunted throughout it's Caribbean Range. The species is a Red Alert species and considered Threatened throughout its range. In the Bahamas the "bag limit" is 50 birds per day. In many areas of the Caribbean there is no bag limit. The bird is a year round resident of the Southern tip Florida but it's numbers increase in the summer as many of the White Crowned Pigeons that nest in Florida Bay and Biscayne Bay fly in from Cuba and the Bahamas. This photo was taken on Plantation Key as the White Crowned Pigeons flew in and out of a Ficus Tree that was full of fruit, which is their main food source. As always thanks for looking and all the comments !!
