Telephone operator 1959
No name written on the back. Printed in Dallas TX. Dated by printer
January 1959. I keep looking at the stove in the next room, and it is
a reminder of how dedicated these phone operators were during that
time. The clock reminds me of a clock we had back in that era. I do
wish I could make out the calendar to see how soon after the photo was
taken that the film was sent off to develop.
I sure wish I had that stove, though.

I was pleased that the picture was so sharp and well maintained, even though it had been floating in a sea of photos. No scratches, either, but a few creases, as you can see. This is one of my favorites.

Believe me, zitakamugira, this is not an everyday thing here, either. This is an old photo that was in my mother's things, and I remembered when there was the need for this type of phone system. You could dial "0" and they would come on the line and say "Operator. How may I direct your call?" Gosh, that was long ago!!

Thanks for this, my mom was a phone operator in Shawnee OK from the 50s to the 80s and my how times changed through the 60s and 70s for progress!! She is now 80 years old and has fond memories of it. Her supervisor in the beginning wore skates so she could roll back and forth through the line to do her job, there were a handful of operators on the job 24/7.

The calendar does show a month with 31 days and with the 1st falling on a Monday. December 1958 does fit that bill (Jan. '59 doesn't), and going back, there's not another match until July 1957. The month's name, although indecipherable, looks longer than "July." October 1956 is another candidate, but that's a long time to wait to print. Excuse the obsessiveness; been reading too much Errol Morris photo-analysis.

Nice Picture. I was the first male operator at Norman High School in Norman Oklahoma. I also worked the switchboard at Norman Municipal Hospital and Military switchboard in Stuttgart Germany before working for AT&T in Norman as a long distance operator. Looking back, I would give anything to go back and work that way again. We really gave service back then. Unlike today when no one cares if you get a call through or not.
