Sarajevo, February 2012

Tuesday, February seventh. The state of the snow in Sarajevo's Baščaršija and Stari Grad neighborhoods. Snow on the tree that grows in the old caravan stop Morića Han. Han means "inn" but this is a true caravansaraj, as you can see from the ancient courtyard here, which is cobbled with round pink (and slick as heck) river rocks. In the past camels and wagons would park here, and travelers would sleep in the upstairs rooms. Now there is a restaurant and an excellent carpet store.

Tuesday, February seventh. The state of the snow in Sarajevo's Baščaršija and Stari Grad neighborhoods. The minaret of the Begova Mosque (Gazi Husrev-begova Džamija) seen behind its kickass tree. The obscured structure is the clock tower (Sahat Kula), also built by Gazi Husrev-beg, Sarajevo's most illustrious ancient Ottoman chief.

Tuesday, February seventh. The state of the snow in Sarajevo's ancient Baščaršija and Stari Grad neighborhoods. Looking straight west down the Farhadija, the main pedestrian street in Stari Grad. Just beyond the snowy Austrian dome (you see in the middle of the picture there) is the courtyard of the Sarajevo Cathedral, which I photographed earlier from the south.

Tuesday, February seventh. The state of the snow in Sarajevo's ancient Baščaršija and Stari Grad neighborhoods. Try as I might to avoid the same touristy photos you'll see everywhere, sometimes the stuff just sneaks in anyway. Here is the old stone wall of the Begova Mosque (Gazi Husrev-begova Džamija) and it's spectacular old courtyard tree. Across the street is the old caravan stables (and inn), Morića Han.

Sarajevo, February 2012

Tuesday, February seventh. The state of the snow in Sarajevo's ancient Baščaršija market neighborhood. The snow on the ground between shops has been re-piled from in front of the doorways. A week later, tiny little alleyway units dug the snow out and loaded onto trucks to be hauled out of town. A week after that, all that snow got shoveled off the roofs and into the alleys again, so it looks just like this once more.
