Rose amongst thorns

Rose amongst thorns

Strobist: sun shining brightly high above camera left, shoot-through umbrella camera right triggered with Cactus v5.

Model is my gorgeous girlfriend, Jie. Shot at a public rose garden in suburban Sydney, Australia. Dang 50 speed limit sign in the background is an obvious distraction. Apart from that I'm pretty happy with this shot considering how harsh the sun was. Constructive criticism always welcome.

I haven't posted any images for a while. I was made redundant from my IT job in February. After moping around at home for a month I was back at my old job doing casual work. You'd think with all the extra time I'd be out shooting but all motivation was shot when I lost my job. I did order the Cactus wireless triggers and shoot-through umbrella to mount my 580EX II. Works really well. Just need practise in balancing the light.

Breakwater and Wagonga Inlet

Breakwater and Wagonga Inlet

Breakwater and Wagonga Inlet, Narooma, NSW, Australia.

It's amazing what lengths we go to in order to hold the sea at bay. Those breakwaters are made of massive rocks taller than a man and very heavy.

Sunset over Round Hill Nature Reserve

Sunset over Round Hill Nature Reserve

View over Eubalong-Mt Hope Road, Round Hill Nature Reserve, NSW, Australia.

To the left is the nature reserve, in the distance the nature reserve ends where wheat fields are rudely carved out of the mallee. (Mallee is a uniquely Australian type of dry scrub where the dominant tree is a low, scrubby, multi-trunked Eucalypt called the mallee tree).

Single exposure with CPL and 3-stop grad ND filter over the sky.

Apostlebird (Struthidea cinerea)

Apostlebird (Struthidea cinerea)

Apostlebird (Struthidea cinerea), near the Lachlan River at Euabalong, NSW, Australia.

Ok, I've broken my rule on this one. It's not 100% crystal clear and I don't upload shots that aren't. That said, my keeper rate is usually really low considering my bird lens ain't got any image stabilisation. Anyway, I wanted to share this shot as it shows the enormous tail these birds have plus it's showing off a tasty snack I saw it dig out from a nearby dead branch.
