Male Asian Lion
Nearly all wild lions live in sub-Saharan Africa, but one small
population of Asian lions (Panthera leo persica) exists today only in India's Gir Forest. The Gir Forest (Gir
National Park & Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat) is a 1,400 km²
area of dry land consisting of scrub and teak forests in the North
West of India. Asian lions once prowled from the Middle East to India.
Now, only 400 to 425 of these magnificent animals survive in the wild.
The Gir Forest's dry teak woods were once a royal hunting ground.
Today they are a reserve where the endangered Asian lions are heavily
protected. Now a second population of 100 to 150 of Asiatic lions live
in zoos.
Asian or Indian lions (Panthera leo persica) and African lions
(Panthera leo leo) are subspecies of the same species. The biggest
visual difference between the two subspecies are:
The Asiatic lion is in general smaller than its African counterpart
with shorter limbs. The mane is thinner than the African lion’s,
although the African lion’s mane can vary in length throughout parts
of Africa. The coat of the Asiatic lion is normally thicker with the
mane running the length of its belly.
Asiatic lions have smaller prides and territories than the African
lion averaging only 2-3 females per male.

De Perzische of Aziatische leeuw (Panthera leo persica) is een ondersoort van de leeuw.
De dieren zijn slechts iets kleiner dan de Afrikaanse leeuwen
(Panthera leo leo) en hebben een huidplooi midden over de buik. De
manen van de mannetjes zijn eveneens kleiner. Zelfs zo dat de oren te
zien zijn. Bij de mannelijke Afrikaanse leeuwen zijn de oren door de
grotere manen meestal niet zichtbaar.
De familiegroepen zijn ook kleiner, meestal 2 verwante vrouwtjes met
hun jongen.
De leeuw waar in de bijbel over gesproken wordt (denk aan ‘Daniël in
de leeuwenkuil’) is deze Perzische leeuw. En ditzelfde geldt voor de
afbeelding van Alexander de Grote met een leeuw.
Het is zelfs zeer waarschijnlijk dat de leeuwen die in de Romeinse
arena’s werden gehouden om te vechten met gladiatoren, maar ook om
christenen te doden, voor een belangrijk deel Perzische leeuwen waren.
In het begin van onze jaartelling leefde de Perzische leeuw in een min
of meer aaneengesloten leefgebied van Griekenland via Turkije en Syrië
naar Irak, Iran en van Pakistan tot in Noord-India.
De aantallen van deze leeuwensoort zijn enorm geslonken geweest tot er
rond 1900 nog maar 15 leeuwen overbleven. De laatste jaren echter is
het aantal exemplaren gestaag aan het stijgen, nu zijn er een 400 à
425 (telling 2010) in het wild. Ze leven allemaal beschermd in het Gir
Forest National Park in Noordwest-India (1.400 km²). In dierentuinen
over de hele wereld leven circa 125 Perziche leeuwen.

Schitterende opname van deze niet zo bekende Perzische leeuw. Ik kende hem tenminste niet.
De verschillen met de gewone Afrikaanse leeuw zijn zoals je beschrijft goed te zien.
