Pallas Cat or Manul in Diergaarde Blijdorp (Zoo Rotterdam, the Netherlands).
Pallas Cat (Otocolobus manul), also known as the Manul, is a small
wild cat of Central Asia. The cat is quite at home in steppes, cold
deserts and the rocky country between heights of 1,000 and 4,000 m.
The Pallas Cat is about the size of a domestic cat but looks much
larger due to its stocky build and long, dense coat, which helps
shield it from the cold in its frosty habitat.
The head-body length is 50-65 cm, not including its 21 to 31 cm tail,
and it weights 2.5-4.5 kg.
The combination of its stocky posture and long, dense fur makes it
appear stout and plushy.
The colour varies from light grey to yellowish buff and russet. There
is no marked sexual dimorphism.
The eyes are large and set forward in the head, reminiscent of an owl.
They have probably evolved like this for hunting by sight.
Pallas's cats are thought to be crepuscular hunters and to feed on
small rodents, pikas and birds.
They hunt primarily by ambush or stalking, using low vegetation and
rocky terrain for cover; they are not fast runners. They spend the day
sheltering in crevices or abandoned burrows of other animals, although
they have also been observed basking in warm sunshine.

De manoelkat (ook wel steppe- of pallaskat genoemd) is een kleine
wilde kat uit Centraal-Azië.
De manoel is helemaal thuis in de steppen, koude woestijnen en de
rotsige hoogten tot 4.000 m.
Met een lengte van 50 à 65 cm en een gewicht van 2,5 à 4,5 kg is de
manoel ongeveer zo groot en zwaar als een gewone huiskat. Er zijn twee
vachtkleuren: oranjebruin en zilvergrijs. Terzijde van het gezicht
zijn zwarte strepen, rond de ogen zwarte en witte ringen en stippen op
het voorhoofd. Er is een soort bakkebaard langs de wangen. De 21 à 31
cm lange staart is ruig met donkere ringen en punt.
Het uiterlijk is nogal karakteristiek. De ogen zijn groot en doen
denken aan een uil.
De kat heeft een laag voorhoofd en lage, ver uiteenstaande oren. Men
zegt wel dat dit en de grote ogen hem in staat stelt om in de
schemering en de nacht op het gezicht in plaats van het gehoor te
jagen.
De mamoels zijn aangepast aan een ruw klimaat. Ze eten voornamelijk
knaagdieren, andere kleine zoogdieren en vogels. Door zich achter
rotsblokken te verschuilen kunnen manoels ongezien een prooi bespieden
en met behulp van een lage vegetatie besluipen. De manoels zijn geen
snelle lopers. Overdag zoeken ze beschutting in rotsspleten en
verlaten holen van andere dieren; hoewel ze ook wel worden waargenomen
koesterend in de warme zon.
