Cubs Sri Lanka Leopard 2
Young Sri Lanka Leopards (here 3 months old) in Burgers Zoo, Arnhem, the Netherlands.
The Sri Lanka leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), also known as the
Ceylonese leopard or Kotiya, is a subspecies of leopard native to Sri
Lanka.
The Sri Lanka leopard is one of the ten known subspecies of leopard.
Its coat is tawny or rusty yellow, stamped with dark spots and
rosettes. Its known as probably the largest of all subspecies of
leopards. Female weight: 29 kg; males averaged 56 kg.
In the wild live according to a census in 2007 only about 835 Sri
Lanka leopards.
In zoos around 60, of which around 30 since 2001 in Burgers Zoo in
Arnhem are born. Burgers Zoo plays a prominent role in the
preservation of this endangered species.
In Burgers Zoo are next to the large residence that the visitor can
see, two outdoor areas and within several stays behind the scenes.
This makes it possible for more couples, and adult females with their
pups to keep. Other zoos have young animals from Burgers Zoo.

De Sri Lankaanse panter of Ceylonpanter (Panthera pardus kotiya) is
een pantersoort die alleen voorkomt in Sri Lanka. Daar leven de
panters in verschillende omgevingen. Zo zijn ze te vinden in
groenblijvende droge bossen, dicht begroeide jungles en hooggelegen
bossen. De Sri Lankaanse panter is één van de tien ondersoorten van de
panter.
De vacht heeft een roestgele kleur met grote zwarte stippen over het
lichaam. Op de buik zitten echter geen stippen. Een vrouwtje weegt
gemiddeld 29 kg en een mannetje 56 kg.
De panter jaagt vooral op inheemse hertensoorten zoals de muntjak en
het axishert. Ook jaagt hij op wilde zwijnen en apen. Soms valt hij
ook gedomesticeerde koeien aan.
In het wild leven volgens een telling in 2007 nog slechts ongeveer 835
Sri Lanka panters.
In dierentuinen ongeveer 60, waarvan circa 30 sinds 2001 in Burgers
Zoo zijn geboren.
Burgers Zoo speelt dus een vooraanstaande rol om de soort in stand te
houden.
In Burgers Zoo bevinden zich naast het grote verblijf dat de bezoeker
kan zien, nog twee buitenverblijven en meerdere binnenverblijven
achter de schermen. Daardoor is het mogelijk om meerdere paartjes en
volwassen vrouwtjes en hun jongen te houden.
Andere dierentuinen krijgen jonge dieren van Burgers Zoo.
