I have to admit that at the time of taking
the photo all I was thinking of was keeping
the racers in frame -- The speed blur of the
background was a pleasant suprise.
Your aperture of f/4 was probably the reason
for the background blur. You had just enough
aperture to keep the skaters in focus but
still have a good amount of blur behind them.
