Brian from Indiana living in New York City

Brian from Indiana living in New York City

© Charles Tang 2009
Oil on canvas.
This is the first stage of the painting, blocking in the colors . It's a fairly large painting and it will take some time to build up the paint..
Like thousands of young people that come to New York City to find a new life and challenges, Brian is a Catholic Irish from Indiana. He stayed in New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina and then moved to New York City. This painting is about Brian seeking his own identity -- in spite of his religious upbringing and childhood -- and also about his dreams and hopes for the future. Scattered around his room are objects that represent who he is. There is a photo of JFK with female underwear draped over it and a map of Paris hanging in the background. There is a photo of "The Dead Pope," as Brian calls it, leaning against his bed in the foreground. The disappearing figure of Brian in the background symbolizes his pain and the struggle to find out who he is. There is a faint suggestion of the New York City skyline beside a contrasting Indiana landscape in the window. The sequential painting is about Brian coming to the crossroads of his life, going back to Indiana.
Thank you Brian for letting me tell your story!

Park Slope backyard, view from roof top.
This painting was started last year. Unfortunately, the weather changed from sunny to rainy condition, then I got busy with other things.
It is great to finally finish this painting! I am trying to devote more time to my art. Hopefully, I will have a lot more paintings to show! Thanks for coming to see my paintings!
