Feb 2012 - Heaviest snowfall in Rome since 1985
Snow is not a big deal in Northern cities, but here it is An Event, causing more or less equal amounts of delight, surprise, chaos and some catastrophe. Traffic of course went worse than haywire. Branches and trees came down all over town, in some cases blocking roads and driving the insanity of Rome traffic to stratospheric levels. Trains were stopped in their tracks leavng passengers shivering - in some cases all night. Outside town several drivers got caught in snowdrifts and froze to death in their vehicles. Snowball battles raged, snowmen of various shapes and sizes were assembled, people went snowboarding down the sides of the Circus Maximus. The forecast says more snow is coming soon.
