Smart Meter

The meter can capture and send near real-time energy usage to the customer and Duke Energy. Having this information paves the way for new energy efficiency programs that help customers understand more about how they use energy, ways to use less and strategies for saving money each month.

The meters also make possible remote meter reading and automated outage reporting. In fact, with smart meters, Duke Energy will know about a power outage and can start assessing the problem before a customer calls to report it.

Currently, Duke Energy has installed approximately 60,000 Echelon smart meters onto customers’ homes system-wide, including 14,500 homes served by the McAlpine substation in Southeast Charlotte, N.C.
