Sad ... stilled life with fallen leaves

This is a hen pheasant I found dead on the verge. These birds are mostly bred and raised in captivity and released into the wild in the autumn. They are then shot by hunters for... umm... sport. A few do escape and breed in the wild. I had several in my garden through the summer and I have seen hens with up to 12 chicks in tow.
It is currently hunting season. I am not sure whether this bird was damaged by hunters, by local foxes or a passing car.

A nice shot - but very poignant - yes some people have a strange concept of what constitutes "sport".

so sad. this is a classical still life, "nature morte".
a beautiful tribute to the ways of life.

Kathy, yes it is a shame. Increasingly, I find myself unable to ignore things like this. I agree with James Baldwin that you have to face things you want to change.

bluegallery: Thank you for the comment and fave. I thought it was very sad and very beautiful, reminiscent of European still lives.

That is so very sad! I am glad you took the picture (which is beautifully done) and posted the story along with it. In this day and age when most of us don't really have to hunt for food, this is such unnecessary killing :-(

Very sad. We get many in this area dead on the roads where motorists won't even slow down for a second. If it had been the fox there would be nothing left, so much more likely to be a car. How can anyone class killing them as sport!
