I'd never seen anything like this before. I find the juxaposition of the Sacred ancient and the common modern thought provoking. Well done.

just after i uploaded this, my girlfriend saw it on the screen and said "WOA!".
one thing i can't help but imagine in this image, due to the wires, is whether the neighbouring poles are also crucifixes.
the wires to suggest something centralised, then dispersed {power through a grid}. not ubiquitous but certainly dispersed.
i'm not religious myself, but i have always been very interested in religion as a viral meme.
while i still think that this image is somewhat trite, i would be interested in seeing it executed in sculptural form .. now THAT would get a "WOA!" or two, don't you think?

excellent work.
gierszewski [deleted] (92 months ago | reply)
That's just so cool. I don't think it's trite - if it were in an art gallery, it would be hailed as a profound statement about the position of religion in modern society. Or something.
(I can't figure out if it would be even better as a landscape, with crucifix-poles, each with a christ nailed to them, stretching to infinity.)

Inside sleeve photograph on The Doors "LA Woman". Who knows if it still exists or not, had a half-naked woman crucified to a power pole. I think this is a very powerful image, meme, whatever you want to call it.

Inside sleeve photograph on The Doors "LA Woman".
see, i knew that i stole it from somewhere.
i just didn't know where from. still .. not sure if i've ever come across that album before.

Wondering if hanging myself on a cross wouldn't be more appropriate than a Santa hat. Hmmm. I do love this image. Crucifixes have always totally freaked me out ~ raised as atheist Jew.
striatic (91 months ago | reply)
well .. since jesus wasn't crucified over christmas, it wouldn't be at all appropriate.
hurleygurley (91 months ago | reply)
oh yeah, for Easter, that's a harder job anyway. It'll be appropriate then surely. ;}

am I the only one who noted the blatant problem with the phrase, 'athiest jew'?

it is quite possible to be an athiest jew.
"jewish" is at once a religious, cultural and ethnic categorisation.
one might be a jew by blood, and raised with the cultural trappings without being at all religious.
SMN (90 months ago | reply)
well, you learn something new every day.
hurleygurley (89 months ago | reply)
I would guess that a great majority of jews are agnostic or atheist even or especially in Israel (aside from the vocal radical idiots). Like being a New Yorker or Catholic, you can never stop being a jew even if you disavow the religion and Jewishishness, it's runs deep in the cultural veins. My mother tried to escape her identity because she grew up in a Jewish ghetto in Brooklyn but despite becoming a Japanophile and buddhist she is unmmistakelbly (even to an
Eskimo probably) Jewish ~ she's a constant questioner, (a give away) short, squat, curly haired, hook nosed, physically inept, self-deprecating and a terrific worrier.

they didn't .. but like i said in an earlier comment, it would be cool if they did.

yeh.. maybe haf some fake blood constantly dripping off the sides too...that would make some picture!

Somewhat trite? Maybe, but that doesn't rob the image of its power. Most of us will react viscerally to this picture without respect to any perceived triteness.

I'm thinking more along the "lines" of how the worlds priorities are the same as they when a savior was hung and people werent moved by that (all in the name of progress)

Like it. And yes, it's definitely possible to be an atheist Jew. You're required to follow the laws and make observances and so on, but nowhere does it say that you're actually required to believe. Isaac Asimov used to describe his relaxed level of Judaism as "I am Jewish enough." :)

You gotta pick up a copy of the Doors LA Woman. I am not a huge Doors fan, but that album is a masterpiece.
Fucking great image and comments to follow are very intriguing.
Thank god they are taking down all the power polls in SF. I will never be able look at one the same again.

Im a musiscian in fresno,ca and have been looking for a pic to use with proper cotent pertaining to my music, and culture. I came across this pic and thought it would be perfect. I was wondering if I could use this to produce some flyers to advertise our shows. It would be an honor to use it.

What's more thought-provoking (or blasphemous)? An artist creating a "juxaposition of the Sacred ancient and the common modern," or a church making money from a telecom company by agreeing to put a cell-phone tower in the shape of a crucfix in the front yard of the church?
striatic (69 months ago | reply)
What's more thought-provoking (or blasphemous)?
the cell-phone tower thing.
cross_and_star_of_david (69 months ago | reply)
this picture is extrememly sacreligious. and so is the cross shaped cell phone tower. Jesus died on the cross (not a telephone pole) for our sins, and this is how you show respect for God?
striatic (69 months ago | reply)
this is how you show respect for God?
the intent is neither respectful or disrespectful, but i can see how it might be considered sacrilegious.
by the way, you spelled "sacrilegious" incorrectly.
