lest we forget
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
John McCrae ~ "In Flanders Fields"

this poem is beautiful and haunting at the same time, I always get totally depressed when thinking of the "whys" of it. Yeah, let's remember all the victims of this and any war, nowadays even stronger than in the past, given that the signs are all for oblivious forgetfulness and repetition all over :(

oh I do poetry all the time, but in view of the rather "laconic" commenting here at flickr I haven't dared so far to drop in poems ;)

It's so sad. I read somewhere the world went mad after WWI.

And the author of the poem, Canadian army physician Col. John McCrae, died in 1918 after 3 more years of war from its writing. I commend your attention also to the Eric Bogle song "The Green Fields of France". www.geocities.com/~worldwar1/default-mcbride. html
