I have tried this pattern swatch sized with 3
different hooks and it always just comes out
as a very soft wave and not zig zags! Does
this improve on the large scale??
Is there a step to ch 3 before turning? I
just did my first turn and it's looking a
little wonky on the edge. Just want to be
sure I didn't miss something before I get too
far into it.

Yes...It will go zig zag after the the first block of about 20 cm in length...it will look more affective using an array of colours too...
