The Imperial Harem was a place where the sultan could, broadly speaking, indulge in debauchery​. However these were also the family quarters. The harem was ruled by the sultan's mother or the Valide Sultan. The daughters were next in the hierarchy, followed by his wives, then his concubines or women who he had already slept with. Close attention was paid to women the sultan had an eye on, but was yet to sleep with. Women who he was no longer interested in, and who had not borne him children ended up being maids to concubines​, wives, daughters, or the the valide sultan in that heirarchic​al order.

The Pena National Palace (Portuguese: Palácio Nacional da Pena) is a Romanticist palace in São Pedro de Penaferrim, municipality of Sintra, Portugal.

The palace stands on the top of a hill above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th century Romanticism in the world.

The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials
