Milky Way over Minaret Lake

I was so tired after hiking up to this point. After we got up to the top and set up camp, I set my alarm for 11:30PM and went right to bed. As I hiked out to this lookout point under the stars, the moon rose over the distant mountains and illuminated the towering cliffs over Minaret lake in the Ansel Adams WIlderness.

Incredible previsualization and execution. SG and I were just out last night with some astronomers to see the Milky Way. Unfortunately the area closed at 11pm just when the sky was just getting dark. So much to learn about astrophotography. For example your moon rise element here is perfect at 11:30 pm but yesterday for use the moon set at about 9 pm. Anyway, I have lots of questions and will research them out in time. Meanwhile, I need to wipe the drool from my face at looking at your capture. Outstanding!

Unfortunately this is one of those photos that is equally about having the right equipment as having the vision. You need a great digital sensor- full frame for the best results- and an ultrawide f2.8 lens. I bought my Samyang 14mm 2.8 lens just to take photos like this!

Thanks! Ill be giving lessons in the hoover wilderness this coming weekend- that is if anyone can find me!
