This beautiful doe approached me last June. The experience of a wild animal taking an interest in me was mesmerising.

A beech tree stands isolated on Stanmer Down, South Downs National Park. I intend to drink a bottle of Harveys Tom Paine Ale under this tree on a hot summer evening. That would be perfect.

Using a ND grad filter for the scene of Castle Hill was easy, because they lying snow brightened up the landscape by a couple of stops. Although daytime raised temperatures just above freezing, allowing the snow to partially melt, conditions became bitterly cold once the sun went down.

Snow fell across England and Wales on Saturday night/Sunday morning. The South Downs received 10cm, with drifts of up to 50cm in places. The snow partially melted during the daytime, but as temperatures fell sharply after sunset, it re-froze, creating a lethal surface.

Treading through melting snow left me with soaking wet boots. To make matters worse, my boots froze while on Swanborough Hill. I found being outside from 9am to 6pm hauling weighty equipment for twelve miles tiring. Walking through melting snow requires much effort, but it was clearly worth it.
