The Plough

The Plough

Easy one this - the plough, aka the big dipper, aka a bit of Ursa Major/the Great Bear. Visible roughly North-East in the sky.

First attempt at a bit of astrophotography on a clear night.

Results weren't too bad, considering we're in the middle of Glasgow and the light pollution is a nightmare.

Shot using a Canon 600D on a tripod + EF 50mm f1.8 II lens.

M31 Andromeda Galaxy - possibly!

M31 Andromeda Galaxy - possibly!

The 3 stars of Cassieopia are visible in the top right of the shot, and bottom left corner I think shows M31 Andromeda galaxy - see notes. visible in the North-West of the sky. I've tagged what I think some of these stars are, would very much appreciate it if anyone more knowledgeable could correct me if I'm wrong!

Orion

Orion

The constellation of Orion, visible in the winter in the South, often quite low down near the horizon. The middle "star" in Orion's sword (the three points of light hanging down in a row close together) is actually the Orion nebula M43, quite pleased that you can actually see in this shot that it's slightly fuzzier than a star. The reddish star at the top right is the red supergiant star Betelgeuse, which astronomers think may go nova soon (for certain definitions of "soon"...)
