blackburne house

situated on Hope Street, Liverpool. Blackburne House was originally built between 1785 -1790 it was the countryside home of John Blackburne the Mayor of Liverpool in 1788.

In 1844 ship owner George Holt purchased the property. in that year the building was opened as the first girls school in Liverpool, in 1874 the original house was rebuilt and enlarged and became the Liverpool Institute high school for Girls. it was awarded grade II listed status in 1975 it sadly closed its doors as a school in 1986, one famous ex pupil was Edwina Currie.

the building lay unused until 1992 when it was decided it would be an ideal location for the Womens Technology and Education Centre and so in 1994 it opened its doors once again.
