Ajax come to town

Ajax come to town

Yesterday Ajax were in Manchester for their Europa League match against United. They brought with them a lot of supporters. A lot of the supporters were enjoying a pre-match snifter in Shambles Square. There were also a lot of Her Majesty's Wonderful Officers of the Greater Manchester Police. Everyone seemed to be having a good time.

I asked one of the officers if he minded if I climbed up onto a wall to take this shot. "Go ahead," he said, "but you might get some stick from them." As I finished the sweep of the shot I noticed that indeed some of the crowd were gesticulating in an amusing fashion.

This is an eight shot stitch with Hugin. Inevitably with a big crowd of people milling about, getting registration on the edges is not easy - especially as I took very little regard for accuracy when swinging around. There are a few obvious errors - mostly on the straight lines - but a few less obvious and amusing headless people and one bodiless man. Ho hum - maybe one day I'll go back and correct them.

Most people are frequenting Sinclair's Oyster Bar which has some interesting history - but we'll cover that another day.

52 Weeks of Manchester is a project to document a city I visit several times each week. I plan to take a few pictures each week. I'm putting the good ones in a stack and I'll post a shot each week over the course of a year. Comments and questions are always welcome, especially critique!

There's nothing to it...

There's nothing to it...

I was on holiday last week, so a delayed 52WoM post.

Space Invader

Space Invader

Found in a back alley, no idea what the razor wire was for.

I've spotted space invaders or video game creatures in various places in Manchester, more to follow.

Reflections

Busy with work this week, I haven't had a chance to shoot Manchester. Hopefully next week I can get out and get something new.

This is the building above All Saints in Spinningfields.

When life gives you lemons...

When life gives you lemons...

... make lemonade.

It was very dismal and dreary in Manchester this week. I nearly didn't take the camera. I certainly figured there'd be nothing worth getting it out of my bag for. But then I spotted another photographer. As I often do, I looked to see what it was he'd spotted and the only thing I could see that might be interesting was the fact that the top of the Beetham Tower was lost in the mist. A little while later, I spotted an opportunity for something I figured might work. So here it is, the grandeur of the Deansgate Terrace, a magnificent brick structure, I think built for the London & North East Railway (LNER) in the foreground and the tower, the tallest in the UK outside London, receding into the mist.

Apparently the terrace was built in 1898 to hide the Great Northern Warehouse which was considered ugly at the time. The tower is a Hilton Hotel up to level 22, then it cantilevers out 4 metres where there is a bar called Cloud 23. Above are apartments from level 25 up to the triplex penthouse on level 47. It also hums during windy weather, the hum has been recorded at a B below a middle C.

I've deliberately processed it with that misty, drizzly, mizzly feel.
