The background (or foreground, in the case of reflections) can be used by the photographer as a tool to enhance or modify the mood of the entire image. Just giving it a relevancy in the capture (using color, light or the image composition) it can play a main role in the entire image.
In this samples, the photographer Gueorgui Pinkhassov is playing with this idea in a very clever way. You can test how the "feeling" of the image is stronger using this reflections or background patterns.
