It is actually a cover of a certain type of shell. It is said and believed that if you find in (and it is extremely hard to find) you are getting lucky. Many are trying to find it for ages...

wonderful shot and subject! in italy we call it "st. Lucy eye", and it's the "cover" of a shell called "astrea rugosa", very beautiful indeed!

found many of those on zl.rat...they only bring you luck if you actually give them to someone as a present.
it is possible to buy them too, in some places (i bought mine in corsica) they are called the eyes of st lucia (i think) who was actually blind.

I have found these in Greece and they are called Skiathos Pearls. Yes it is said that if you find one you will be sure to return to the island. Beautiful shot great photo
