Risale al 966 la più antica citazione del borgo di Sticciano, feudo
aldobrandesco, dopo la capitolazione di Montemassi venne sottomesso a
Siena.
Nel 1461 passa ai Piccolomini ai quali i Medici confermarono la
signoria facendo di Sticciano un centro di rinfeudamento granducale.
Nel borgo, ancora intatto ed interessante per gli scorci pittoreschi
ed il panorama della sottostante pianura, sono da segnalare la chiesa
romanica di Santa Mustiola a navata unica terminante in un abside
semicircolare, con il presbiterio rialzato ed alla sua destra il
campanile rettangolare a forma di torre inserito dentro la chiesa, e
due interessanti portali: quello principale con un architrave decorato
da due croci romaniche e quello laterale che presenta una decorazione
di modanature sugli stipiti e palmette con foglie incrociate sulla
cornice del doppio archivolto, ed il palazzotto baronale dei
Piccolomini a forma di padiglione seicentesco.
Dates back to 966 the earliest mention of the village of Sticciano, an
Aldobrandeschi feud, after the capitulation of Montemassi was
subjected to Siena.
In 1461 passed under the Piccolomini family which confirmed to the
Medici family the lordship making Sticciano a center of a new feud of
the Grand Duchy.
In the old borough, still intact and interesting for the picturesque
views and the landscape of the plain below, are to be mentioned the
Romanesque church of Santa Mustiola built with single nave ending in a
semicircular apse, with a raised presbytery on his right,
rectangular-shaped bell tower added in the church, and two portals:
the main one with a lintel decorated with two Romanesque crosses and
the one on the side that has decorated jambs, moldings and palms with
leaves on the frame of the double archway, added to the baronial
palace of the Piccolomini's in the shape of seventeenth-century
pavilion.
