05Feb12 pheasant coucal feathers

Newer Older

I had not even heard of a pheasant coucal and I am not sure if I have seen one.

But I must have as they are found in many parts of Australia ( it is a sort of cuckoo and about 60 cm ) The Pheasant Coucal is found in dense understorey vegetation, , in open forests , and around wetlands, on farmlands with thick grasses and weed-infested thickets, such as Lantana. Often seen in parks, gardens and along roads or railway lines.

These feathers were probably picked of the ground in a local park or wetland area. They were in the box I was given by my family for Christmas. It was full of nature objects to draw - lots of feathers, seeds, leaves and a nest..

What an excellent present for Christmas - far better than a shop-bought variety. I thought these were the pheasant feathers as we have in the wood sometimes. I would say they are British but they are kept to release for shooting in the winter and come from Asia (I think).

I very much like how you have tackled the different textures on each section. The downy part always seems one of the hardest to get right for me.

A really thoughtful gift....like the shells that one of my younger friends brought to me. I really should get them out and draw some just for her...These are so beautifully special...and so hard to paint.

They look like you could touch them from here and feel the texture on the feathers. Lovely!
